Once a top prospect in the Red Sox system and still considered to have a promising Major League future, Ryan Kalish is facing yet another rehabilitation stint after undergoing successful surgery on his right (non-throwing) shoulder on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Kalish, who is a left-handed hitter and can proficiently play all three outfield spots, was projected to compete for a spot on Boston’s opening day roster this year. He was a candidate to platoon with the right-handed hitting Jonny Gomes in left field and also see time in right field, spelling the switch-hitting Shane Victorino (who is more productive as a right-handed hitter).
Upon learning that Kalish would require surgery and miss six to eight months, the Red Sox signed Ryan Sweeney to a minor league deal to provide outfield depth. Sweeney is expected to compete for a roster spot with switch-hitting outfielder Daniel Nava.
After an encouraging Major League debut in 2010, Kalish underwent neck and shoulder surgeries in 2011, missing much of that season and part of 2012, and he has yet to return to full health.
